westend drums

Q65 were one of the great dutch beat groups in the 60's (there were 1000's) and these drums were made by my wifes fathers girfriends dad. Does that make sense? Anyway they are very rare now and if you ever find one just let me know....

Thanks Rob this is a great website with some fantastic pictures of westend drummers and kits. My wifes fathers girlfriend(if that makes sence) is Margriet de Hooge (the girl with the maracas in the picture on the website) I am a drummer myself and play a Hayman Vibrasonic Kit.but would very much like to get my hands on a westend but i gather they are like hens teeth ( Kippen tanden?)
Cheers Murray

Thanks Murray. Your wifes fathers girlfriend must be Piet. Margriet mentioned him in one of her emails. That particular picture with a very young Margriet was send by her.
Very rarely Westend kits are being offered. I own one myself, black diamond pearl.
By the way, which country are you from, Murray? Your wife is Dutch, I suppose?
Cheers,
Rob.

Rob yes that's right Piet and Margriet. My wife is dutch but we both live in Scotland with our 2 little girls.
You are very lucky to have a westend kit. Have you had it for long? I have never seen one for sale. I wonder how many were made?
I love old drum kits. The kit i play is a hayman and was was bought new by my father in 1968 and is still sounding great after 40 years. I also have an old premier kit from the 70's.
Cheers Murray

I own my Westend kit for a couple of years now. I bought it in The Hague, where it was for sale.
When I was young I couldn't afford a Westend kit. It was rather expensive at the time!
There were 300 - 400 Westend kits made, Murray. No one knows for sure, this has never been documented by the brothers De Hooge, as far as I know.
Good luck with your beautifull old drum sets, Murray.
Cheers,
Rob.

Rob do you use your kit for gigs?
What kind of band do you play in?
You can check my band out at www.myspace/aberfeldytheband

Hi Murray,
No, I don't use my Westend kit for gigs. I only play on it at home.
For gigs I use a Rogers 70/80(Big R)or a Slingerland from 1966. Besides these kits I own a Ludwig from 1965 and a Premier kit (about 1975).
I'm happy that my wife understands my drum "addiction": I have to store 2 kits in our bedroom....
Regards,
Rob.

Rob Cheers glad you like the band.I love the "neder beat"bands. A friend of mine plays in a band over here called "The Thanes" Maybe you've heard of them? I think he even sang for the Outsiders at a gig in holland recently.
It's good to have an understanding wife. My wife has to put up with my "collection" of Drums,Guitars,Motorcycles and Bicycles!!! I have a garage but theres not much space left in it.

That's correct, Murray: Lenny Helsing did play with The Outsiders, in 2008.

By the way, Wally Tax, singer from the start, died in 2005.
In the early days The Outsiders (from Amsterdam) played on Ludwig. I have no idear with what kit they're playing nowadays.
Ik lees wel weer van je.
Groet!
Rob.

That first clip, about the lost and found Westend kit of Jay Baar, Q65, is made by my wife, Murray.
Nice to find the clip here also. Thanks!
Groet,
Rob.
